data story

Who visits Malaysia?

Half of all arrivals come from one country next door: Singapore.

Mostly from next door. In a typical month Malaysia welcomes around 3 million foreign visitors, and about half of them are Singaporeans crossing the causeway. Indonesia and China are next, but nobody comes close to Singapore. Malaysia's busiest border is a land bridge, not an airport.

What it means

  • Half of Malaysia's visitors are Singaporeans: about 1.56 million in October 2024 alone, crossing the causeway to shop, eat and visit family.
  • The rest of the top ranks are regional neighbours: Indonesia (10.9%), Thailand (6.0%) and Brunei (3.2%). Proximity beats everything.
  • China is the big long-haul source at about 10%, far ahead of any Western country.
  • The top four are all Asian and make up 77% of arrivals. Western visitors (UK, Australia, US) are a small slice each.
  • It reframes 'tourism': Malaysia's visitor economy is overwhelmingly a short-haul, neighbourhood one, not a long-haul destination story.
