How is car road tax calculated in Malaysia?

Road tax (LKM) is set by engine capacity. Up to 1,600cc it is a flat rate; from 1,601cc it is a base rate plus a progressive charge per cc above the band's threshold, so bigger engines pay steeply more. Rates differ by region (Peninsular vs Sabah/Sarawak) and body type (saloon vs non-saloon). This tool uses the official JPJ schedule for private cars.

Yes. Non-saloon vehicles (SUV, MPV, pickup, window van) use a different schedule from saloons. Below 1,600cc they pay more than a saloon in Peninsular Malaysia, but the progressive rate above 1,600cc is lower, so large-engine non-saloons pay less than an equivalent saloon.
